Nelson Mandela extended an invitation to the prosecutor who had sought the death penalty—ultimately leading to his life sentence with hard labor—for a private lunch. Additionally, he invited his former prison guard from Robben Island Prison to attend his presidential inauguration as a gesture of reconciliation and unity.
